What are the components of effective mathematics teaching?   What are students doing when they are developing powerful understandings of mathematics?   Be sure to reference course readings in your discussion. Effective mathematics instruction does not occur by chance or in isolation. It involves the classroom teachers and all other partners in education: parents, school administrations, school boards, specialists, support from the whole community. Each partner plays a significant role by creating the conditions for teachers and students to have the best learning environment possible for the best mathematics program. Assessing Beyond Testing

  One of the essential job duties of teachers preparing assessment for learning and as learning is “ to use assessment to inform instruction, guide next steps, and help students monitor their progress towards achieving their learning goals” (Growing Success, 2010, p28). It is a definitely a guiding objective for us all.   I have found interesting ideas in the following reading. Fluckiger & Co. (2010) discuss the power of formative feedback by teachers and peers. The 21 st century is an exciting time for science, society, and mankind. We are witnessing a radical change in technology and mathematics education. Teachers, parents, administrators, government officials, all agree that the present curriculum needs to reflect the changes in this world and make our students be effective participants and less passive thinkers. The active mathematical reasoning became a central activity of the classrooms and changes in educational policies have been implemented in Ontario and Canada. I think it is time to put mathematics education in the public eye and be concerned about the achievement levels on the national and international scales.
